Korea’s Jae Chang wins the 2024 Metro Summer Event

After a lengthy ten hours of final day play, Korea’s Jae Chang clinched the record breaking 2024 Metro Summer Event! Chang ran hot throughout the final day, winning almost all of his flips and eliminating four of his eight opponents at the final table.

Jae Chang

This was Chang’s first win at the Metro Card Club and he humbly shared the feeling of victory,

“Since I launched my franchise take-out coffee business, I don’t get to participate in many poker tournaments. And though I’ve been playing at the Metro Card Club for a decade, I’ve never won a tournament there so I can say I am very happy to win this time. Playing tournaments 30+ years, it’s always a great pleasure to compete in the same situation regardless of gender, age, and nationality, and to win always makes me feel that I’m still improving myelf.”

When asked if there were difficult moments throughout the event, Chang said, “I don’t think there were any, maybe because my long tournament career has gradually offset my shortcomings. Whenever I play, I always think that a moment is the last hand, and when it’s over, I consider it just one of another tournament. However if there were mistakes made, I prepare for the next moment by making up for the mistake and fixing it.”

On the final day, Chang was surrounded by several decorated locals. When asked about his strategy, he shared, “My strategy is always the same. It’s about surviving. There’s a saying that the strongest is not the one who survives, instead, the last man standing is the strongest man. Having said that, I think the most important thing is to play without making mistakes. Losing because of luck happens and I can accept it without any emotions, but getting eliminated by a mistake means I still have a lot to study and learn. As Doyle Brunson said, ‘it takes only three minutes to learn how to play but it takes a lifetime to master.'”

After an ICM heads up deal, Chang earned a payout of PH₱ 1,468,036 (~$25,985).

Final Day recap

The 2024 Metro Summer Event set out to be a record breaker, advertising a PH₱ 6 Million guarantee, and with 912 entries pouring in across four entry flights, it smashed it. The event amassed a prize pool of PH₱ 9,120,000 (~USD 161,420) which was 2.5 times more than its very first edition. The top 130 players shaved off portions of the pot with the largest cuts determined on the final day.

18 players returned, each one hunting down the PH₱ 1.7 Million top prize. Shortest stacked Ivan Tabucal (18th) was first to tumble with {as}{8s} dominated by John Michael Rivera‘s {ad}{qc}. The Day 1A chip leader Liao Po Hsun (17th) followed next with his remaining 11 bb claimed by Richard Marquez on a bad beat. Liao’s {ac}{kh} was outdrawn by {as}{10h} when a ten spiked the flop. After another two busts, Jae Chang knocked out Ronald Acosta (14th) with a dominated ace. The final table was eventually formed after Chase Cokaliong blinded out.

Metro Summer Event Final Table

Leading the hunt was locally decorated player Rommel Angeles (50 bb) while Chang trailed by just 6 bb. With everyone vying for glory, it took nearly two hours for the first elimination. After progressively losing chips, Marquez was eliminated by Chang with {ac}{kc} dominating {ks}{qc}, Marquez shoved on a flop that completed {kh}{6d}{ah}{10d}{10h}. Next showdown, Angeles cleaned out Mandeep Singh with pocket Kings over pocket Queens. Day 1B chip leader Gerardo Lubas III joined the cleanup party, railing short stacked John Michael Rivera in 7th place. However, Lubas wasn’t able to hold on to his chips, losing an all in showdown against Randolph Acacio then the rest of it to Chang on a missed flush draw.

Jon Ramos

Before the next bust out, Jon Ramos (pictured above) lucked out with his 4 bb against Acacio to secure a much needed double up. It was all in on the turn {2d}{as}{kh}{8c}. Acacio with {ks}{js}, Ramos behind {10d}{8h}. The river was {8c}. From this point, Chang and Ramos dominated the felt. Chang grinded to amass a big lead while Ramos landed another double up off Acacio who dropped to half a big blind and soon fell in 5th place to Angeles. Ramos added more to his stack by finishing off Angeles (4th) with {ac}{kd} over {ad}{js}.

Jose Marco Espela

At three-handed, Chang saw his stack swing. He paid a double up to the day’s entering chip leader Jose Marco Espela with {ah}{9h} over {ac}{8c}. This was later followed by a costly pot to Ramos with {jd}{9h} outkicked by {kh}{9c} with progressive bets on a board {6d}{7h}{3c}{9s}{5h}. This gave Ramos the lead.

Jae Chang

Minutes later, Chang answered back with a huge double up off Ramos with {6s}{6d} dominating {4s}{4h}. Chang eliminated Espela in 3rd place with {ks}{10c} straight over {kc}{jc} two pair on a board {qh}{qs}{jd}{5s}{ad}. Chang and Ramos quickly struck an ICM deal and set aside PH₱ 258,820 for the eventual winner. Ten minutes in, chip leader Chang closed it out with {ks}{qs} flush over {jd}{4c} trips on a board {jc}{3h}{5s}{js}{9s}. The shoves were on the turn. Chang spiked the winner on the river.
