Moses Saquing dominates heads up to win record breaking Metro Summer Event

In a superb display of heads up domination, Moses Saquing crushed Edilberto Gopez  to win the 2023 Metro Summer Event. Congratulations to the newest champion! Saquing pocketed an ICM deal payout of PH₱ 1,257,705 (~US$ 22,630) and a new trophy for his handsome collection.

The Metro Summer Event was one hot ticket with everyone coming out of the woodwork. This generated a record breaking 870 MSE entries. With the buy in bumped up to PH₱ 7,000, the prize pool ballooned to PH₱ 5,400,960 (~US$ 96,670), the largest in MSE history.

Leading up to the final table, 18 players returned on the final day with Jasper David at the helm. David maintained course and reached the final table, eventually falling in 7th place. Metro regular Ruderico Dela Cruz also found his way to the final table and did not hold back his excitement. Cruz delivered the first final table bust in Hernan Jaybee Villa then went on to finish in 4th place.

Making an impressive debut at the final table, newcomer Saudino Macavinta proved to be a tough opponent, leaving his tablemates guessing at every turn. Despite his valiant efforts, Macavinta ultimately settled for 3rd place. He fell to Saquing on a board {8h}{2s}{3c}{3h}{5s}, Saquing {kh}{8c} outkicked Macavinta’s {8d}{7d}.

Before heads up got underway, Saquing and Gopez reached an ICM deal that guaranteed Saquing the higher pay of PH₱ 1,047,000 (~US$ 18,800) and Gopez PH₱ 962,295 (~US$ 17,300). Another PH₱ 200,000 (~US$ 3,600) was set aside for the champion.

Heads up proceeded with Saquing and Gopez just a handful of blinds apart. They tugged at the chip lead until Saquing dragged in a crucial pot that drove his stack north nearly 2.5x ahead. Preflop action Gopez opened 2.5 bb, Saguing three-bet to 7.5 bb, Gopez called. On the flop {kd}{10d}{kh}, Saquing c-bet 4 bb, Gopez raised to make it 10 bb to call, Saquing three-bet nearly all of Gopez’s stack leaving himself 2.5 bb. Gopez folded. The stream had Saquing muscling with {7h}{6h} bluff, Gopez had {ad}{6c}.

Sitting on a healthy advantage of 62 bb to Gopez’s 27 bb, Saquing won pot after pot until the final hand arrived. Down to 7 bb, Gopez pushed with {ks}{7d}, Saquing dominated with {ah}{10h}, the board was {4d}{3d}{10s}{9c}{8s}.
